Chapter Seven

––––––––

Kendra lay on a thick, cozy blanket in the middle of a grassy clearing. Brady’s house was nearby, but still far enough in the distance that she was surprised when he called where they were sitting part of his back yard. Brady leaned against a large shade tree and she rested her head on his lap. It had been only two days since their first date, and she was surprised to realize that she felt totally comfortable with him now. There was something about him that had a calming effect on her. Kendra supposed it was his warm, inviting eyes, the smile he always seemed to wear, and his gentle demeanor. She was convinced that he was the man she wanted to spend the rest of her life with, and she hoped that he felt the same way.

“Would you like another strawberry?” Brady asked, leaning closer so she could hear. “We have plenty more!”

Kendra smiled. “I would love one.”

Brady reached over and picked up a plump, delicious looking fruit and slowly lowered it to Kendra. She parted her lips and accepted the bright red strawberry, relishing it for a moment before beginning to chew. The lush juices tantalized her taste buds and she let out a slight moan before swallowing.

“You know,” she said at last. “The woods around your beautiful home are pretty scary.”

“Are they?” He asked. “I think they’re wonderful. I love everything about nature.”

“Oh, I do too,” she said, “But what happens if a wild animal makes his way to our little picnic and tries to maul me?”

Brady laughed. “Why on Earth would that ever happen? You’re safe with me. I promise.”

“Are you sure?” She asked. “I mean, there are probably some big animals out there.”

“Probably,” Brady replied. “But in case you haven’t noticed, I’m pretty big myself—bigger than most guys. There is a reason for that, you know.”

She gasped. Of course, Brady wasn’t human. She had almost forgotten that he was a shifter.

“Oh my,” Kendra said. “I hope I didn’t offend you!”

“Not at all,” he replied, his smile never fading. “I’m not a wild animal, silly. I’m a bear shifter!”

She felt her cheeks grow warm, and wasn’t sure if it was from embarrassment or something else entirely.

“I still haven’t seen you shift, yet.”

“No,” he replied. “You haven’t.”

“Well, may I?” Kendra asked. “I mean, if it’s not wrong to ask. I’d love to get to know every part of you, and that seems like a pretty important part.”

Brady was silent for a moment, and then he carefully scooted out from underneath her. He stood up, stretching his arms and legs.

“Are you sure you really want to see? It scares some people.”

“Of course I want to! You don’t scare me at all.”

“Okay, but I can’t do it in these clothes. I’ll go out into the woods, take them off, and then come back as a bear.”

Kendra placed a hand over her chest and her eyes widened.

“Oh no! But how will I know it’s really you? What if it’s a real bear?”

Brady laughed again, full and deep.
